Procedures For Granting Temporary Residence Cards To Foreigners In Vietnam

A temporary residence card depends on the foreign national's qualifying status and supporting documents. The sponsor, passport validity and immigration category should be reviewed before an application is prepared.

Confirm the qualifying immigration category

A temporary residence card allows a qualifying foreign national to reside in Vietnam for its authorized period under the applicable immigration framework. Eligibility must be checked against the actual basis for residence, such as an appropriate investment, employment, study or family category. A visa or an intention to remain for several years does not alone establish entitlement to a card. Diplomatic cases have a separate route.

Review the sponsor and supporting documents

Identify the inviting or sponsoring organization or person and the evidence supporting the requested category. Prepare the passport, application and photographs in the required form, together with relevant corporate, employment, investment, civil-status or other records. Check names, dates, passport details and the consistency of the documents. Foreign-issued records may need translation or other formal preparation for their intended use.

Use the current application procedure

Confirm the competent immigration authority or, for an applicable diplomatic case, the relevant foreign-affairs authority. Check current forms, submission channels and any sponsorship requirements before filing. Keep evidence of submission and respond to a request for clarification or additional records. A published processing period starts under the conditions of that procedure; it should not be treated as a guaranteed completion date for an incomplete application.

Assess validity rather than assume a fixed term

The maximum duration depends on the category and the relevant rules, and the remaining passport validity can limit the card issued. Do not assume that every applicant may choose the longest period. Review the intended residence basis and supporting record together. A card does not by itself replace any separate permission to work or other obligation associated with the person’s activities.

Monitor changes after issuance

Keep the card and passport details accurate and review changes affecting employment, sponsorship or the basis for residence. Check the procedure and timing before expiry instead of assuming an automatic renewal.
